One hundred years ago, on November 3, 1926, a tragedy struck the small mining town of Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when the Barnes-Hecker mine collapsed, claiming the lives of 51 of the 52 men working the mine. The worst industrial disaster in Michigan history, many of the miners were Finnish-Americans or Finnish immigrants. To this day, Ishpeming is a cultural hub of Finnish heritage.
